Control Dynamics Corporation Helmet Radio

In order to help speed up football games, the NFL allows one-way radio communications between the coach and the quarterback (the quarterback can't talk back).  The radio link repeater system is actually controlled by an impartial (a.k.a. help the big east/west coast teams for more TV ratings) employee of the NFL attending each game.  The radio link is suppose to be cut off when the quarterback leaves the huddle and when there are only 15 seconds left on the play clock.  Since the system uses a repeater, it is possible for a NFL team to defeat this "cut off timer" by having the coach transmit directly on the quaterback's helmet receive frequency (the repeater output frequency).  This would require the proper Motorola RSS software for the GP350 and the programming RIB interface, but is very doable given enough dedication.  It is also possible to build a simple frequency transverter using a 5 MHz clock oscillator, a diode mixer, and a CATV distribution amplifier for the output RF power amplifier.

Getting verifiable information on the Control Dynamics Corporation helmet radio system is very difficult.  The following information is the best I could do, and may not be accurate.

The NFL helmet radio system is most likely based around a Motorola GP350 (confirmed) or GP300 UHF two-radio system .  For obvious reasons, the radio link uses an encrypted audio system.  The audio encryption module appears to be based around the Selectone ST-25 rolling code voice encryption module.  I say "appears" because this is based on the fact that in an old NFL press release, they said there are "268 million code possibilities" and the Selectone ST-25 manual also references 268 million possible user code keys.  Contrary to popular belief, the module's encryption routine is not based around XOR'ing the audio with a psuedo-random noise sequence, like what a DES-based system would be using.

There was also another old Motorola press release which mentioned "all quarterbacks have wireless receivers-enhanced with Motorola MC68HC05 microcontrollers-built into their helmets."

The Selectone ST-25 is also based around the Motorola MC68HC05 microcontroller.  Hmm...

The "green dot sticker" on the back of a quarterback's or defensive player's helmet means that it has a radio system installed.  Only one radio-equipped helmet for each team is allowed on the field during a play.

    

Rolling code scramblers rapidly change the center "inversion" point in a sweeping or random fashion.  Decrypting this signal would involve a device which can track the phase of the sweeping inversion frequency, then apply the normal voice inversion techniques.  I think...  Baseband speech inversion "inverts" the audio signal around a pre-set frequency that never changes.  This makes those systems very easy to defeat.

A possible software solution to breaking this stronger form of rolling code speech inversion encryption would consist of a program that would let you select a "sliver" of audio and then perform the standard speech inversion techniques on it.  You'd then recombine each of these "decrypted" slivers of audio back into a single audio file.

Below is an example waveform from a "hopping" speech inversion voice encoder.  Since each hop point includes a little data burst, we can use that point to split the waveform into individual audio sections.  Since the speech "inversion" point is what is really hopping, you would then apply standard speech inversion decoding techniques to each of these new audio sections.  Recombine all the audio sections back together, and you should have a properly decoded speech inversion signal.

Here is an attempt at decoding actual NFL quarterback encrypted audio traffic using only common software techniques.  Note the 'warbling' tone created as the inversion point sweeps back and forth, this is a little different than the older "hopping" inversion technique.

The following is an audio example from a rolling code speech inversion scramber and an "amateur" attempt to break it using common speech inversion descrambling software.  The spoken words are "This is an example of rolling code inversion scrambling."  Note the data burst at the beginning of the audio sample and the audio "clicks" as the inversion point hops.

"According to Michael Washvill, a voice and data security specialist with a federal agency, Variable Split-Band (VSB) scrambling can be broken, but not in real time.  The only practical attack is through trial and error.  The scrambled speech must first be recorded, then divided into finite time segments according to the hop rate.  Each segment is processed through a variety of split point combinations until clear speech results.  A TRW systems engineer and former U.S. Department of Defense employee, Jim Walker, concurs: The 'brute force' method of trial and error is the only way to break VSB-scrambled speech.  Assuming that the 'bad guys' have a stolen VSB unit and no prior knowledge of the code key or code keys, 50 to 100 minutes of dedicated effort are required to descramble one minute of VSB-scrambled speech. A rule of thumb is 60:1 'grunt time to clear speech time'."

Both the quarterback and defensive radio helmets will be kept in secure storage.  The secured storage trunk or container will be of exact and identical specifications and will be provided by the league to all 32 clubs.  The backup "live" helmet for the primary player and the single "live" helmet for the secondary player, along with two spare battery packs, will be secured in the trunk.  The trunks will be positioned behind the benches near the Motorola communication centers and will be designated as off-limits areas to players, coaches, and club personnel.  The trunks will be clearly marked, and access will be controlled and monitored by NFL personnel or designees throughout the game.

Supposedly, the helmet radio systems cost $28,000 per team.  LOL!!!

Notice to all those wily hackers out there.  Be sure to jam the repeater's output frequency (helmet receive)!  You'll also want to wait until a pivotal point in the game to start jamming the frequency.  Wait until the fourth quarter or so.  You don't want to tip anyone off!

Since these transmitters are not legally FCC-licensed, it's your patriotic duty to see that they are shut down.

A homebrew tactical co-channel jammer can be made out of an old Radio Shack scanner and a modified UHF-band amateur radio tranmitter.

To give you an idea of what having a lot of money can do, the RF field strength of these illegal NFL transmitters often exceeds that of many low-power FM broadcast stations, which the FCC just loves to raid using armed jack-booted thugs carrying automatic weapons (to shoot your cat), and with support helicopters flying around.  Seriously.

Selectone ST-25 Mobilecall® Voice Encryption Module

The default Resident Password in all ST-25B/C modules is "ST25".  It can be any four character sequence using alphabetic or numeric characters.

The default primary User Code Key is "4444444".  Heh.      

A Selectone ST-954 Programming Kit is required to use the Product Manager software.  The ST-954 kit consists of three items: a ST-954B Programming Adapter which interfaces between a PC and the Selectone product being programmed, a 6-foot RS-232 serial cable assembly, and a DB-9 to DB-25 adapter plug.

NFL Quarterback / Defensive Helmet Frequencies

May not be accurate, you know how it goes.  All repeaters appear to use CTCSS or DCS (Digital PL) on the input and output.  The repeater input frequency should be 5 MHz higher than the output frequency.

Both the quarterback and defensive player's helmets appear to operate on the same frequency, just with a different DCS tone.

NFL Referee Pagers

The referee and umpire at each NFL game has a pager that is used to notify him if a play is to be reviewed.  When activiated, the pager vibrates and will display either "HOME," "VISITOR," or "NFL," depending on who initiated the review.  This system, like most radio-based pager systems, is very vulnerable.  It is possible to "clone" the pager's cap code so you can send false pages, but that's boring.

What you really want to do is jam the pager frequency during the last two minutes of the game.  See, only the NFL booth officials can call for an instant replay review during the last two minutes of the game or before halftime.  If you jam the pager's receive frequency, the referee or umpire CAN NOT be notified, and the next play will take place.

The pagers that NFL referees appear to use are Motorola LS350s.  These usually operate in the standard 929-930 MHz pager band.

If the NFL is not using a commercial FCC-licensed paging system to triggers these pagers, then they are transmitting illegally.

        

Ultrasonic Fake Whistle Generator

This is an audio system which uses two ultrasonic frequencies mixed together by the non-linear nature of the atmosphere.  The final mixed products include an audio tone which sounds just like a referee's whistle.  This will cause the player to stop or to be momentarily distracted.

Can be operated from the sidelines or from the audience.

Ever wanted a device which you could point at a person's larynx and hear everything they are saying?  Believe it or not, such devices actually exist, but are usually only in the hands of government-level intelligence organizations.  We'll try to fix that...  It should also work through a blocking play sheet!

Transmit on Parabolic Microphone Frequencies

It is also possible to transmit your message over the frequencies used by those parabolic microphones you see on the sidelines.  Most of them transmit in wideband FM on unused UHF television frequencies (coordinated by the SBE).  Here is a Sennheiser Audio Transmitter mounted on a parabolic microphone.  The listed frequency is 524.625 MHz.

The NFL is licensed by the FCC to use any frequency between 494 MHz and 806 MHz for Part 74 broadcast operations.  RF power output is limited to around 250 mW.

Are you a coach looking to cheat?  It is also possible for a team to intercept and record the audio coming from the TV network's parabolic microphone system.  You'd then later sync the audio up with the game film.  The direct parabolic audio is uncut, which could be useful for decoding any offensive or defensive audio cues.  In a similar technique, you could also intercept the wireless microphone NFL Films (or the TV networks) often place on a player during a game.  This is also a raw audio signal feed which could be useful for a team looking for an advantage.

Other sneaky ideas could involve intercepting and monitoring the wireless video transmissions from all the TV network's cameras filming around the stadium.  Don't forget the blimp's wireless video feed!  You could even hide several small wireless video cameras along the sidelines.  These should be positioned to discreetly intercept any hand signals sent in by the coaches.

It might also be possible to monitor raw, uncut analog satellite video transmissions by using a standard C-band (analog) satellite receiver with a frequency transverter on its front-end to "tune in" on the satellite uplink frequencies.

The airwaves belong to the public!  Set up your own transmitter in the 14 GHz area and aim it at the satellite.  Hit those big TV network where it hurts the most - advertisement revenue!

NFL Referee Microphone Frequencies

Wouldn't it be great to override an umpires' microphone during a nationally televised game?  Imagine hearing "Emmanuel Goldstein is a pedophile!" or "Lick me where I pee!" over your television.  Fun for the whole family!  Since some of these are unlicensed frequencies you can legally do just that!

The NFL umpires' microphones appear to be Electro-Voice/Telex WT-1000REFs.  These are slightly modified versions of the standard Telex WT-1000 wireless microphone, but with an external PTT switch added.  These same Telex models are often used in high-school auditoriums when they put on plays or concerts.

They operate in the unused UHF television bands.  Model selections are Band A: 680-704 MHz (U.S. TV Channels 49, 50, 51, 52), Band B: 722-746 MHz (U.S. TV Channels 56, 57, 58, 59), Band D: 798-822 MHz (Germany), and Band E: 838-862 MHz (U.K.).  There are approximately 950 possible channels with 25 kHz spacings.  Modulation appears to be wideband FM (+/- 40 kHz deviation) and the RF output is a maximum 100 mW.

Known UHF umpire microphone frequencies are: 722.3 MHz, 722.7 MHz, 723.8 MHz, 725.7 MHz, 727.1 MHz, 727.7 MHz, 732.2 MHz, 735.0 MHz, 735.5 MHz, 738.1 MHz, and 739.1 MHz.

The microphone's matching UHF receiver is usually an Electro-Voice CDR-1000 Dual RE-1 with a dual-antenna system.

Telex WT-1000 FCC Technical Documents

The FCC documents list the operating frequency ranges as 520-608 MHz and 614-746 MHz with a maximum RF output power of 250 mW.  This is slightly different from the normal user manual listings.
